Amedeo Battipaglia è un italiano emigrato in Australia, dove lavora da circa vent'anni come guardafili lungo una linea ferroviaria. Quando decide di prendere moglie si rivolge ad un sacerdote, che lo mette in contatto epistolare con un'italiana, ma temendo di venire rifiutato a priori per il proprio aspetto, manda alla ragazza la foto del suo avvenente amico Giuseppe, spacciandosi per lui.
